A young dolphin was recently killed on a beach in Argentina after tourists pulled the animal out of the ocean to snap pictures with him or her.
After a man dragged the small dolphin from his or her ocean home, a mob of people passed the tiny animal round the crowd, as the hot sun beat down. The dolphin reportedly died during the incident, but that didn’t stop some people from continuing to pose for photos with him or her.
According to news reports, once the tourists had lost interest in the dolphin, they discarded his or her lifeless body onto the sand. PETA is urging Argentinian authorities to find and arrest those responsible.
Dolphins are highly-intelligent animals who live in close family groups with dedicated mothers who may nurse their young for up to 10 years. One can only imagine the trauma this baby experienced as he or she was passed around like a toy, and the grief the dolphin’s mother must be feeling.
What You Can Do:
Never, ever touch a marine animal or remove him or her from the water.
If an animal appears to be in distress, or is injured, or if you see anyone harassing any animal, contact your local authorities immediately. If they are unresponsive you can contact PETA.
Spread the word! It’s too late to help this dolphin, but we can share his or her story and let the world know that animals are NOT OURS to use as props for a selfie or for any other reason!
"150 years ago, they would have thought you were absurd if you advocated for the end of slavery. 100 years ago, they would have laughed at you for suggesting that women should have the right to vote. 50 years ago, they would object to the idea of African Americans receiving equal rights under the law. 25 years ago they would have called you a pervert if you advocated for gay rights. They laugh at us now for suggesting that animal slavery be ended. Some day they won’t be laughing."
A vegan I was talking to explained their choice to be vegan: “It’s wrong to kill chickens for meat, but it’s also wrong to enslave them in order to produce eggs for us to consume. It’s wrong to enslave cows and force them to become pregnant over and over again in order to consume their milk.”
I’ve seen a few pro-life posts on tumblr asking, “How can you be vegan and pro-choice?”, as if vegan values and pro-choice values are mutually exclusive. On the contrary, vegan values are exactly in line with pro-choice values. Both involve allowing sentient beings the right to bodily autonomy.
Christian Sampson, a 21-year-old photographer from Peru, Indiana started taking photos around the theme of mental illness in 2014 for an advanced photography class.
“It actually started out as physical illnesses like cancer, but I wanted to create something that people struggled with every day but couldn’t see,” he tells The Huffington Post Canada. “I wanted the majority of people to relate to them.”
With limited resources, Sampson asked his friends to be his models and researched some of the most common mental disorders around the world. His work brought him down to 12 smaller topics, ranging from depression to schizophrenia to insomnia. In eight weeks, Sampson designed and photographed each shot, making sure his version of each disorder was accurate.(Source)
